Getting the Royal Treatment (Blog #2/4)

The Maharaja of Jodhpur wanted to do something for his people suffering from drought and famine in the 1930’s, so he commissioned the building of a grand palace for himself. Little would he have known that this would be the last palace built in India. Modern with Art Deco furnishings (the rage in the 30’s) yet otherworldly in its opulence, the palace is still home to the Maharaja. Luckily for the rest of us, one wing has been converted into a Taj Group hotel. The Maharaja apparently decreed that guests should be treated as in the days of yore. What does that feel like?

Consider this: A red carpet laid out on the front steps for our entrance with a shower of rose petals; Peacocks and flocks of parrots to accompany you on a stroll through the bougenvilla garden; A bubble bath with flower petals floating on top awaiting you in the early evening; A soulful tabla and santoor serenading you as you dine on the magnificent back verandah; Service to beat hands down that of other grand hotels around the world. For two shining days we indeed felt like royalty, cocooned in warmth and comfort with our every material need anticipated and met. No wonder the 1% wants to hang on so ferociously to what it’s got!
